Overview

Duke Energy is one of the largest electric power holding companies in the United States consisting of three business segments: a regulated utility (which accounts for the vast majority of its revenue), non-regulated commercial power generation and sales, and an international business. Its regulated utility operations segment serves a population of approximately 12 million people in five states. The commercial power and international business segments own and operate diverse power generation assets in North America and Latin America. Duke Energy comprises three main business units: - U.S. Franchised Electric & Gas, the utility business, is conducted primarily through Duke's subsidiaries Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Ohio, Duke Energy Indiana, and Duke Energy Kentucky - Commercial Power is a business unit that owns, operates and manages power plants and engages in the wholesale marketing and procurement of electric power, fuel and emissions allowances related to these plants, as well as other contractual positions. Duke Energy Commercial Power operates primarily through the subsidiary; Duke Energy Generation Services (DEGS). - International Energy is Duke's power generation and marketing business unit serving regions of Latin America, and conducts its activities primarily through the subsidiary; Duke Energy International.
