FirstEnergy
Energy generation, transmission, and distribution company with operations in seven American Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern states
Overview
Formed in 1997 when Centerior Energy merged with Ohio Edison, FirstEnergy is a large electric utility holding company with regulated distribution businesses in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and West Virginia. The company also has an unregulated, competitive power retailing subsidiary for the deregulated markets in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Michigan, and Illinois. FirstEnergy's generation fleet relies heavily on coal-fired power generation, a fact that seems unavoidable given that the company's service territory spans the geographic heart of the American Mid Atlantic coal mining industry. This has made the company a prime candidate for the testing and implementation of technological innovation in emissions control and carbon sequestration, however, and its cleantech initiatives have extended into energy efficiency and smart grid, as well as procurement of renewable generation resources.
